Electronic Arts (EA) will license DTS Interactive real-time surround sound technology for PlayStation2 games it develops, the companies said.
Electronic Arts’ NHL 2002, which is scheduled for release this month, will be “the world’s first game to include real-time interactive surround sound during game-play,” according to the company.
DTS also launched its Software Developers Kit (SDK) for DTS Interactive, allowing game developers to encode surround sound for other PS2 games.
EA is the first licensee to incorporate the DTS Interactive into a Playstation2 console game. Electronic Art’s said the next release with DTS Interactive surround sound will be SSX Tricky, to be released later in the fall, with more titles to follow.
The EA Sports NHL series has been long recognized for its realism and detail. The addition of DTS surround is expected to ratchet up that experience to a new level.
