Dreamcast Selling Faster Than Expected

Sega of America reported today that sales of its Dreamcast game console have passed the 500,000 mark in the two weeks it has been available.

The sales far surpassed the 400,000 units Sega had projected it would sell and the company is now working to ensure enough supply is on hand for the holiday season, said Chris Gilbert, senior vice president of sales, Sega of America, Inc. To place the Dreamcast sales in perspective, Sega executives pointed to the fact that Apple’s iMac personal computer took six weeks to sell 278,000 units and DVD in its first year sold 430,000 units.

The massive sales have taken place despite operational problems with several of the Dreamcast games. The Dreamcast is selling for $199 with games costing about $40.
