Consumer Products Abound At PC Expo

PC Expo’s tilt toward the business and enterprise side of the high-tech market will be once again balanced out by a large dose of consumer and small business products from Hewlett-Packard, Sony, Samsung and others.

PC Expo, which is part of the TechXNY show, starts tomorrow here at the Jacob Javits Convention Center and runs through Thursday. It is expected to draw about 45,000 attendees, down from the 80,000 that have attended past shows, to visit the 350 exhibitors.

The products expected to be introduced this week range from PCs and printers to digital cameras and rewritable DVD drives.

Lexmark will introduce two multifunction devices at PC Expo, the PrinTrio X75 and the X125 All In One Office Center. The PrinTrio is a combination 48-bit scanner, 2400dpi printer and copier. It has a printing rate of 11 pages per minute in black, 6ppm in color, and 9 text-only copies per minute.

The step-up X125 has a slightly higher print rate, 16ppm black and 8ppm color, and a built-in fax with a 33.6Kbps modem. The X75 has PC fax capabilities. The units will ship in July with suggested retail prices of $149 for the PrinTrio and $179 for the X125.

Samsung will introduce several new monitors at the show. From the company’s flat-panel line is the SyncMaster 152b, a 15-inch TFT model. Also on hand is the PPM42S2 42-inch and PPM50H2 plasma displays. These models feature a 3.5-inch bezel, 160-degree viewing angle and have six viewing modes, including 16×9, 4×3 and 10x zoom.

Shecom , a maker of mass storage and multimedia devices, tomorrow will unveil the Ikebana DVD+RW/+R external drive. The drive features both USB and Firewire, making it compatible with the Windows and Macintosh operating systems. It supports random access and sequential write and the company claims the discs burned on the drive are compatible with any DVD-ROM or DVD video player. The drive is ready to ship and carries a $459 suggested retail price.

Sony is conducting a press conference this afternoon and would not release details on its new products prior to that event. However, the general focus will center on the company’s displays, PCs, handhelds and digital imaging products.

The just combined Hewlett-Packard/Compaq will show new Pavilion and Compaq Presario brand desktop and notebook computers and HP’s printer and imaging segments will be on hand with new products.

Belkin Components will show a variety of products ranging from Bluetooth networking devices to PDA keyboards. Belkin’s Bluetooth offerings are the Bluetooth USB Adapter, Bluetooth PC Card and Bluetooth PDA Adapter Card. These are the company’s first in what will be a family of Bluetooth networking products released this year. All are based on the Bluetooth 1.1 specification and will start shipping on July 1. The USB Adapter, estimated street price $69.99, brings Bluetooth technology to any PC or notebook. The PC Card, $79.99, enables a notebook to join a Bluetooth network. The PDA Adapter Card, $79.99, does the same for PocketPC handhelds that have a CompactFlash II slot.

Belkin also will show its 8-1 Media Reader/Writer and Memory Stick Reader/Writer. Both have USB connectors and will ship on Aug. 1 with street prices of $44.95 and $24.95, respectively. The 8-1 model can read and write to CompactFlash I and II, SmartMedia, Secure Digital, MultiMediaCard, IBM Microdrive, Memory Stick and MagicGate memory media.

TEAC America will exhibit an external CD-RW with USB 2.0 connectivity and 40x write, 12x rewrite and 48x read speeds with a $299 suggested retail price that started shipping last week. The company will also display a new network attached storage product with wireless capabilities that it plans to ship in the third quarter this year.

DataPlay is expected to show upcoming devices based on its 500MB rewritable media. These devices are being made under OEM agreements from iRiver and Evolution and are expected to ship in either late June or July.
