Best Buy To Bite Big Apple This Fall

NEW YORK — Best Buy’s long awaited entry into the New York market will finally occur this fall.

After first aiming for February, and then amending the launch to April, the mega merchant is now set on opening 15 largely suburban stores this autumn in advance of the holiday selling season. Shifting timetables precluded the company from specifying a debut month.

All of the locations are outside of Manhattan, and only two are in the city’s outer boroughs (Queens and Staten Island). All will measure 45,000 square feet, save for one 30,000-square-foot site located in the New York bedroom community of Kingston, NY.

Following the first wave of stores, the company plans to blanket the New York metro area with some 40 additional units during the next three years.

“Best Buy plans to bring cutting-edge technology to area shoppers and show consumers how technology can improve their lives,” said president Brad Anderson.

With the opening of three Portland, Ore., stores this spring, New York remains the last major U.S. market to lack a Best Buy presence. Its arrival here will further raise the stakes in one of the nation’s largest and most competitive regions, where chief rival Circuit City currently maintains almost to 30 superstores.

Best Buy must also contend with such well-entrenched local favorites as The Wiz, P.C. Richard, J&R Computer World and 6th Avenue Electronics, and a formidable host of national heavyweights including Sears, Staples, RadioShack, Kmart and Target.
