3Com, Sun To Develop Java/Palm Integration

3Com Corporation and Sun Microsystems announced June 15 that Java technology will be integrated with future PalmPilot devices to allow e-commerce and other new consumer and commercial applications to be developed for the popular Palm platform.

Mark Bercow, vice president of strategic alliances for platform development for Palm Computing (a 3Com company) said consumers could expect to see new Java-based applications for Palm handhelds next year. “Our vision at Palm is devices that can execute financial transactions and home banking and to do that either wired or wirelessly and we believe that Java will go a long way in helping us realize that vision.”

Bercow noted that Java is an ideal platform for Palm handhelds as it offers built-in security, it integrates easily into back-end systems that support e-commerce and there are currently 1 million Java developers. “Presumably a lot of the developers will move over to the Palm platform without a lot of effort,” he said.

3Com and Sun Microsystems announced the agreement at the JavaOne Developer Conference. The companies said they would develop a reference port of the Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition, for 3Com to allow Java developers to create Palm-based applications.
