SANTA ANA, CALIF. — Mophie expanded its line of
charging iPhone cases by teaming up with mobile GPS
developer NeoTreks for the Juice Pack Outdoor edition.
The Juice Pack Outdoor bundles a 2,000 mAh battery-
boosting iPhone 4 and 4S case with a GPS app
that provides more than 650,000 map images. It comes
in an orange and gray combination.
“The Juice Pack Outdoor edition eliminates the need
for iPhone users to carry multiple devices to stay connected
while also accessing super sophisticated GPS,
mapping and tracking resources,” Ross Howe, marketing
VP, Mophie, said. “We are very excited to enter the
app market and deliver a product that combines our
best battery charging capabilities with a valuable and
intuitive application that will keep iPhone users connected
and powered up during any adventure.”
The Mophie Outdoor app is said to include access to
more than 5 million square miles of outdoor recreation
maps for complete coverage of the continental United
States and Hawaii.
The bundle retails for $119, which compares with
“dedicated outdoor GPS units that can cost more than
$500,” Michael Bullock, NeoTreks president, said. A
one-year subscription is included with the purchase. After
the first year, a one-year sub costs $29.95. Consumers
can also just purchase the Mophie app for $29.95.
The bundle also includes a one-year subscription to
Mophie’s Outdoor edition website for desktop viewing
and planning for camping, hiking, biking or outdoor adventures.
After the first year, the service costs $19.99 a year.
GPS tracking is done using AccuTerra or Google
Maps, Mophie said. Downloaded maps can be accessed
without 3G, which is meant to further preserve
the iPhone’s battery life.
Users can save unlimited tracks, place marks and
geo-referenced photos; share adventures via email and
Facebook; and import and export adventures via Bluetooth.
The Juice Pack reportedly extends the iPhone’s use
for an extra six hours of GPS usage, eight hours of 3G
talk time, 16 hours of 2G talk time, seven hours of 3G
Internet, 11 hours of Wi-Fi Internet, 44 hours of audio
playback and 11 hours of video playback. The battery
case has a toggle switch so it can only be used when
needed, and a four-light LED indicator that displays how
much power is left.
